What a great weekend to be on the water or on the surf. Fishing on the surf was a challenge for anglers fishing the DMS and Ocean City Surf Tournaments. Most of the fish being caught were short of scoring length. Congratulations to the guys on my Rick’s Bait and Tackle Surf Team, who placed tied at 11th in the OC Tournament. I know the guys fished their hearts out ! Remember, the sport is fishing, not catching. I did not have the results of the DMS Tournament at the time of this report.
Bob Cleveland and Denny Raber fished inshore favorites and scored about 19 nice sea bas in the cooler. Capt. Eric Ludwig and party also scored sea bass, a huge porgy, and some nice flounder. Tony dambro and Bill Kemmerer fished Site #11 and got covered up in small sea bass. Tog are being taken on the outer wall and at Massey’s Ditch.
Offshore action was a bit slow but Tom Hinchman and Wayne Holman teamed up to boat bunch of mahi while trolling near the Elephant Trunk.
Capt Bill reported Chuck Nagle, Bill's Sport Shop, fishing at Massey's Ditch, said the large croaker bite was still good. He also had 4 throwback flounder and said there are a lot of blues there as well. On another trip, Chuck Nagle, fished Massey's on the opening day of tog and nailed 3 keepers. He also had 2 large croakers up to 14", a throwback striper and 5 seabass all on sand fleas. Josh and Jeremy, drifting the IRI, had 3 keeper stripers up to 12#, all caught on eels. The "Marie Ann" reported that on Tues. they hit the Baltimore and hooked up with 3 whites, a sailfish, dolphin and some skippies. Kerry Lodish was fishing the Wall with sandfleas and came away with 5 keeper tog up to 17". Bully Bob reported a trip with a bunch of his 'athletes'. They went out on the "Katydid" (Capt. Brent & Dave) out of Lewes DE, and ended the day with 220 sea bass, 2 triggers, 2 flounder, 5 blues, 10 cod, 8 ling cod, 1 tog and lots of stories. As we waited to get the fish cleaned, the cold front and rain came through. Captain Aaron Hurd of "Gale Force Charters" out of Indian River Marina runs a charter primarily inshore in the Indian River Inlet and the Back Bays, a great family experience. He had the Mullahey Family out for a trip on Sunday and they caught 8 bluefish and a 29" keeper striper also several throw back flounder using minnows for bait. On Friday afternoon, they landed two 22" stripers and several throw back flounder all on minnows.
